Do not use their biscuits that are give to them for breakfast and dinner as treats. They eat that all the time and will lose interest quickly.

The Munchies

01 Rewarding your dog using the right treats is crucial to getting the best from that training session and in turn the best from your dog.

02 Dogs all have their favourite flavours, likes and dislikes. For example I have a dog that loves fish and the other isn't too bothered.

03 Size matters! For training your treats should be small and bite size. So you don't lose minutes of you training session with your dog chewing.

Quick Training tips

  • Do not use their biscuits that are give to them for breakfast and dinner as treats. They eat that all the time and will lose interest quickly

  • Reward within 3 seconds of your dog doing the behaviour you wanted, wait any longer and your dog wont associate what they just did with the reward.

  • Repeat the training at least 3 times to ensure your dog has understood what is expected of him/her

  • Have a variety of treats so you can keep you dog focused and have something extra special for difficult commands/tricks

  • Rewards are not always treats or edible snacks and some dogs may prefer a toy over food. Get to know what your dog likes best!

Why reward and what treats are best?

Natural is ALWAYS best in my book. Avoiding mass produced and processed treats that have a lot of colours in them is always a good idea. Natural treats provide your dog with a route back to their ancestry, when they were wild animals and had to hunt these natural treats, like pigs ears for example, where part of their diet and are an amazing part of good dental hygiene routines. Giving your dog these treats alongside their normal feeding routine will aid in loss of plaque and tartar on teeth and encourage natural behaviours like caching food, playing with food, chewing, gnawing. The act of chewing on treats releases endorphins (happy hormone) making your dog more content and are great boredom busters.

Reward based training is the best way and fastest way to train and build a relationship with your dog. Encouraging the correct behaviours with food is something dogs easily understand and a simple task or command can easily be learnt in a matter of minutes. Just remember to pick your treat type according to what your dog loves, chicken, fish, sausage, hotdog, cheese are all great treats and will keep your dogs attention and focus. Find something your dog really loves that they want to work for and it will make training your dog a breeze.
